What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over your existing tooth, covering it completely from the gumline up. It restores the size, shape, and strength of a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth.

Crowns are one of the most common and reliable restorations in dentistry. At Zircteeth, each crown is custom-made to fit your bite and match the appearance of your surrounding teeth.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Your dentist at Zircteeth will recommend a crown when a tooth needs more protection or structural support than a filling or bonding can provide. Common situations include:

  • A tooth with a large cavity that has had too much healthy structure removed for a filling.
  • A cracked or fractured tooth is at risk of splitting further.
  • A tooth that has had root canal therapy and needs protection.
  • A worn-down tooth caused by grinding or acid erosion.
  • A broken tooth resulting from injury or trauma.
  • A tooth that supports a dental bridge.
  • A dental implant that needs a crown placed on top to complete the restoration.

If your tooth has become sensitive, painful when biting, visibly chipped, or discolored from structural damage, schedule a consultation at your nearest Zircteeth location. Early treatment preserves more of your natural tooth.

Types of Dental Crowns at Zircteeth

Zircteeth uses high-quality materials selected based on the location of your tooth, the degree of damage, and your functional needs. Your dentist will walk you through the best option for your specific case.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns offer the strongest and most durable option available. They resist chipping, withstand heavy biting force, and provide a natural-looking result. Zircteeth is named for this material because of our confidence in its performance. Zirconia crowns work well for both front and back teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns combine a metal inner structure with a porcelain outer layer. They provide good strength and a reasonably natural appearance. These crowns are a practical choice for back teeth where durability is the priority.

All-Ceramic Crowns

All-ceramic crowns offer the most natural-looking result and work best for front teeth, where appearance is the primary concern. They are metal-free and well-suited for patients with metal sensitivities.

Temporary Crowns

While your permanent crown is being fabricated, Zircteeth places a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. It is removed at your follow-up visit when the permanent restoration is ready for placement.

A dental crown delivers results that go beyond covering a damaged tooth. Here is what you gain from the treatment:

  • Restores Full Tooth Function: Your tooth returns to its original shape, letting you chew and bite without discomfort.
  • Stops Further Damage: A crown seals the tooth completely, preventing bacteria from reaching the inner structure.
  • Relieves Pain and Sensitivity: Covering exposed dentin eliminates sharp sensitivity to hot, cold, and biting pressure.
  • Preserves Your Natural Tooth: A crown saves a tooth that would otherwise require extraction, protecting your jawbone.
  • Balances Your Bite: Restoring a damaged tooth reduces strain on your jaw joints and surrounding teeth.
  • Looks Natural: Each crown is custom-shaded and shaped to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
  • Lasts 15 Years or More: Zirconia crowns withstand daily chewing forces and hold up reliably with proper care.
  • Completes Other Restorations: Crowns, caps, implants, anchor bridges, and protects teeth after root canal therapy.

The Dental Crown Process at Zircteeth

Getting a dental crown at Zircteeth follows a clear, step-by-step process. Most patients complete treatment in two appointments.

Consultation and Examination

Your dentist examines the affected tooth, reviews digital X-rays, and assesses the surrounding bone and tissue. If a crown is the right treatment, your dentist explains the process, materials, and cost before anything begins.

Tooth Preparation

Your dentist numbs the area with local anesthesia so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. The tooth is then shaped to create space for the crown. If the tooth lacks sufficient structure, a build-up material is used to create a solid foundation.

Impressions and Crown Fabrication

Zircteeth takes precise digital impressions of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. These go to our dental lab or in-house milling unit, where your custom crown is crafted to exact specifications. A temporary crown protects your tooth during this stage.

Temporary Crowns

At your second appointment, your dentist removes the temporary crown and checks the permanent crown for fit, color, and bite alignment. Once everything is confirmed, the crown is bonded permanently to the tooth.

Follow-Up Care

Zircteeth schedules a follow-up to confirm the crown is functioning properly and that your bite feels comfortable. If you notice sensitivity or discomfort after placement, contact your nearest Zircteeth office.

How to Care for Your Crown

A properly placed crown, combined with good oral hygiene, provides long-lasting results. Follow these steps to protect your restoration:

1

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

2

Floss around the crown daily, including along the gumline.

3

Avoid chewing on ice, hard candy, or extremely hard foods.

4

Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth.

5

Attend your regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

With consistent care, a zirconia crown placed can last 15 years or more. Regular professional check-ups allow your dentist to monitor the crown margin and catch any issues early.

How many appointments does a dental crown take?

Most crown treatments at Zircteeth require two appointments. The first involves tooth preparation and taking impressions. The second involves placing the permanent crown. Your temporary crown protects the tooth between visits.

Does dental insurance cover crowns?

Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of the cost for crowns, particularly when the crown is needed for structural or functional reasons. Zircteeth is in-network with major insurance providers. Our team reviews your coverage before treatment begins so you know exactly what to expect.

What if my crown feels loose or falls off?

Contact us immediately. Do not leave the tooth unprotected for an extended period. A loose or dislodged crown exposes the prepared tooth to bacteria, sensitivity, and potential damage. Our team will assess the crown and the tooth and provide prompt care.
